Chapter 3

1 AND Solomon became the son-in-law to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house and the house of the LORD and the wall of Jerusalem round about.

2 The people sacrificed only in high places, because there was no house yet built to the name of the LORD, until those days.

3 And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father; only he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place; a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon the altar which was in Gibeon.

5 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in a vision by night; and God said to him, Ask that which I should give you.

6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shown to thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth and in faithfulness and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne as it is this day.

7 And now, O LORD God, thou hast made thy servant king in place of David my father; and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in among thy people, whom thou hast chosen,

8 A great people that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

9 Give therefore to thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people and to discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

10 And it pleased the LORD because Solomon had asked this thing.

11 And the LORD said to Solomon, Because you have asked this thing and have not asked for yourself riches, neither have you asked the lives of your enemies nor have you asked for yourself long life, but have asked for yourself wisdom to discern judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to your words; lo, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has been none like you before you, neither shall any arise after you like you.

13 And I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like you all your days.

14 And if you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David did walk, then I will lengthen your days.

15 And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.

16 Then came there two women who were harlots to plead before King Solomon.

17 And one of them said, I beseech you, O my lord, I and this woman dwelt in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.

18 And on the third day after I was delivered, this woman was delivered also; and we were together in the house; there was no stranger with us, only we two in the house.

19 And this woman's child died in the night because she lay on it.

20 And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.

21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, behold, it was dead; but when I had examined it in the morning, behold, it was not my son which I had borne.

22 And the other woman said, It is not so; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son. And this one said, It is not so; the dead is your son, and the living is my son.

23 And the other woman said, It is not so, the living is my son and the dead is your son. Thus they argued before the king.

24 Then the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.

25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.

26 Then the woman whose child was alive said to the king, because her affections yearned for her son, I beseech you, O my lord, give her the child alive, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor yours, but divide it in two.

27 Then the king answered and said, Give the child alive to the first woman and in no wise slay it; she is the mother thereof.

28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

Chapter 3

1 And Solomon8010 made affinity2859 with Pharaoh6547 king4428 of Egypt,4714 and took3947 Pharaoh's6547 daughter,1323 and brought935 her into413 the city5892 of David,1732 until5704 he had made an end3615 of building1129 his own house,1004 and the house1004 of the LORD,3068 and the wall2346 of Jerusalem3389 round5439 about.

2 Only7535 the people5971 sacrificed2076 in high1116 places, because3588 there was no3808 house1004 built1129 to the name8034 of the LORD,3068 until5704 those1992 days.3117

3 And Solomon8010 loved157 the LORD,3068 walking3212 in the statutes2708 of David1732 his father:1 only7535 he sacrificed2076 and burnt6999 incense6999 in high1116 places.

4 And the king4428 went3212 to Gibeon1391 to sacrifice2076 there;8033 for that was the great1419 high1116 place: a thousand505 burnt5930 offerings did Solomon8010 offer5927 on that altar.4196

5 In Gibeon1391 the LORD3068 appeared7200 to Solomon8010 in a dream2472 by night:3915 and God430 said,559 Ask7592 what4100 I shall give5414 you.

6 And Solomon8010 said,559 You have showed6213 to your servant5650 David1732 my father1 great1419 mercy,2617 according as he walked1980 before6440 you in truth,571 and in righteousness,6666 and in uprightness3483 of heart3824 with you; and you have kept8104 for him this2088 great1419 kindness,2617 that you have given5414 him a son1121 to sit3427 on5921 his throne,3678 as it is this2088 day.3117

7 And now,6258 O LORD3068 my God,430 you have made your servant5650 king4427 instead8478 of David1732 my father:1 and I am but a little6996 child:5288 I know3045 not how to go3318 out or come935 in.

8 And your servant5650 is in the middle8432 of your people5971 which834 you have chosen,977 a great7227 people,5971 that cannot3808 be numbered4487 nor counted5608 for multitude.7230

9 Give5414 therefore your servant5650 an understanding8085 heart3820 to judge8199 your people,5971 that I may discern995 between996 good2896 and bad:7451 for who4310 is able3201 to judge8199 this2088 your so great3515 a people?5971

10 And the speech1697 pleased3190 5869 the LORD,136 that Solomon8010 had asked7592 this2088 thing.1697

11 And God430 said559 to him, Because3282 you have asked7592 this2088 thing,1697 and have not asked7592 for yourself long7227 life;3117 neither3808 have asked7592 riches6239 for yourself, nor3808 have asked7592 the life5315 of your enemies;341 but have asked7592 for yourself understanding995 to discern8085 judgment;4941

12 Behold,2009 I have done6213 according to your words:1697 see,2009 I have given5414 you a wise2450 and an understanding995 heart;3820 so that there was none3808 like3644 you before6440 you, neither3808 after310 you shall any arise6965 like3644 to you.

13 And I have also1571 given5414 you that which834 you have not asked,7592 both1571 riches,6239 and honor:3519 so that there shall not be any376 among the kings4428 like3644 to you all3605 your days.3117

14 And if518 you will walk3212 in my ways,1870 to keep8104 my statutes2706 and my commandments,4687 as your father1 David1732 did walk,1980 then I will lengthen748 your days.3117

15 And Solomon8010 awoke;3364 and, behold,2009 it was a dream.2472 And he came935 to Jerusalem,3389 and stood5975 before6440 the ark727 of the covenant1285 of the LORD,3068 and offered5927 up burnt5930 offerings, and offered6213 peace8002 offerings, and made6213 a feast4960 to all3605 his servants.5650

16 Then227 came935 there two8147 women,802 that were harlots,2181 to the king,4428 and stood5975 before6440 him.

17 And the one259 woman802 said,559 O my lord,113 I and this2063 woman802 dwell3427 in one259 house;1004 and I was delivered3205 of a child3205 with her in the house.1004

18 And it came1961 to pass the third7992 day3117 after that I was delivered,3205 that this2063 woman802 was delivered3205 also:1571 and we were together;3162 there was no369 stranger2114 with us in the house,1004 save2108 we two8147 in the house.1004

19 And this2063 woman's802 child1121 died4191 in the night;3915 because834 she overlaid7901 it.

20 And she arose6965 at midnight,8432 3915 and took3947 my son1121 from beside681 me, while your handmaid519 slept,3463 and laid7901 it in her bosom,2436 and laid7901 her dead4191 child1121 in my bosom.2436

21 And when I rose6965 in the morning1242 to give my child1121 suck,3243 behold,2009 it was dead:4191 but when I had considered995 it in the morning,1242 behold,2009 it was not my son,1121 which834 I did bear.3205

22 And the other312 woman802 said,559 No;3808 but the living2416 is my son,1121 and the dead4191 is your son.1121 And this2063 said,559 No;3808 but the dead4191 is your son,1121 and the living2416 is my son.1121 Thus they spoke1696 before6440 the king.4428

23 Then said559 the king,4428 The one2063 said,559 This2063 is my son1121 that lives,2416 and your son1121 is the dead:4191 and the other2063 said,559 No;3808 but your son1121 is the dead,4191 and my son1121 is the living.2416

24 And the king4428 said,559 Bring3947 me a sword.2719 And they brought935 a sword2719 before6440 the king.4428

25 And the king4428 said,559 Divide1504 the living2416 child3206 in two,8147 and give5414 half2677 to the one,259 and half2677 to the other.259

26 Then spoke559 the woman802 whose834 the living2416 child1121 was to the king,4428 for her bowels7356 yearned3648 on her son,1121 and she said,559 O my lord,113 give5414 her the living2416 child,3205 and in no408 wise2450 slay4191 it. But the other2063 said,559 Let it be neither1571 3808 my nor yours, but divide1504 it.

27 Then the king4428 answered6030 and said,559 Give5414 her the living2416 child,3205 and in no3808 wise2450 slay4191 it: she is the mother517 thereof.

28 And all3605 Israel3478 heard8085 of the judgment4941 which834 the king4428 had judged;8199 and they feared3372 the king:4428 for they saw7200 that the wisdom2451 of God430 was in him, to do6213 judgment.4941

5 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in a vision by night; and God said to him, Ask that which I should give you.

5 In Gibeon1391 the LORD3068 appeared7200 to Solomon8010 in a dream2472 by night:3915 and God430 said,559 Ask7592 what4100 I shall give5414 you.

7 And now, O LORD God, thou hast made thy servant king in place of David my father; and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in among thy people, whom thou hast chosen,

7 And now,6258 O LORD3068 my God,430 you have made your servant5650 king4427 instead8478 of David1732 my father:1 and I am but a little6996 child:5288 I know3045 not how to go3318 out or come935 in.

8 A great people that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

8 And your servant5650 is in the middle8432 of your people5971 which834 you have chosen,977 a great7227 people,5971 that cannot3808 be numbered4487 nor counted5608 for multitude.7230

9 Give therefore to thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people and to discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

9 Give5414 therefore your servant5650 an understanding8085 heart3820 to judge8199 your people,5971 that I may discern995 between996 good2896 and bad:7451 for who4310 is able3201 to judge8199 this2088 your so great3515 a people?5971

10 And it pleased the LORD because Solomon had asked this thing.

10 And the speech1697 pleased3190 5869 the LORD,136 that Solomon8010 had asked7592 this2088 thing.1697

11 And the LORD said to Solomon, Because you have asked this thing and have not asked for yourself riches, neither have you asked the lives of your enemies nor have you asked for yourself long life, but have asked for yourself wisdom to discern judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to your words; lo, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has been none like you before you, neither shall any arise after you like you.

12 Behold,2009 I have done6213 according to your words:1697 see,2009 I have given5414 you a wise2450 and an understanding995 heart;3820 so that there was none3808 like3644 you before6440 you, neither3808 after310 you shall any arise6965 like3644 to you.

13 And I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like you all your days.

13 And I have also1571 given5414 you that which834 you have not asked,7592 both1571 riches,6239 and honor:3519 so that there shall not be any376 among the kings4428 like3644 to you all3605 your days.3117

14 And if you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David did walk, then I will lengthen your days.

14 And if518 you will walk3212 in my ways,1870 to keep8104 my statutes2706 and my commandments,4687 as your father1 David1732 did walk,1980 then I will lengthen748 your days.3117

15 And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.

16 Then came there two women who were harlots to plead before King Solomon.

16 Then227 came935 there two8147 women,802 that were harlots,2181 to the king,4428 and stood5975 before6440 him.

17 And one of them said, I beseech you, O my lord, I and this woman dwelt in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.

17 And the one259 woman802 said,559 O my lord,113 I and this2063 woman802 dwell3427 in one259 house;1004 and I was delivered3205 of a child3205 with her in the house.1004

18 And on the third day after I was delivered, this woman was delivered also; and we were together in the house; there was no stranger with us, only we two in the house.

18 And it came1961 to pass the third7992 day3117 after that I was delivered,3205 that this2063 woman802 was delivered3205 also:1571 and we were together;3162 there was no369 stranger2114 with us in the house,1004 save2108 we two8147 in the house.1004

19 And this woman's child died in the night because she lay on it.

19 And this2063 woman's802 child1121 died4191 in the night;3915 because834 she overlaid7901 it.

20 And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.

20 And she arose6965 at midnight,8432 3915 and took3947 my son1121 from beside681 me, while your handmaid519 slept,3463 and laid7901 it in her bosom,2436 and laid7901 her dead4191 child1121 in my bosom.2436

21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, behold, it was dead; but when I had examined it in the morning, behold, it was not my son which I had borne.

21 And when I rose6965 in the morning1242 to give my child1121 suck,3243 behold,2009 it was dead:4191 but when I had considered995 it in the morning,1242 behold,2009 it was not my son,1121 which834 I did bear.3205

22 And the other woman said, It is not so; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son. And this one said, It is not so; the dead is your son, and the living is my son.

23 And the other woman said, It is not so, the living is my son and the dead is your son. Thus they argued before the king.

23 Then said559 the king,4428 The one2063 said,559 This2063 is my son1121 that lives,2416 and your son1121 is the dead:4191 and the other2063 said,559 No;3808 but your son1121 is the dead,4191 and my son1121 is the living.2416

24 Then the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.

24 And the king4428 said,559 Bring3947 me a sword.2719 And they brought935 a sword2719 before6440 the king.4428

25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.

25 And the king4428 said,559 Divide1504 the living2416 child3206 in two,8147 and give5414 half2677 to the one,259 and half2677 to the other.259

26 Then the woman whose child was alive said to the king, because her affections yearned for her son, I beseech you, O my lord, give her the child alive, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor yours, but divide it in two.

27 Then the king answered and said, Give the child alive to the first woman and in no wise slay it; she is the mother thereof.

27 Then the king4428 answered6030 and said,559 Give5414 her the living2416 child,3205 and in no3808 wise2450 slay4191 it: she is the mother517 thereof.

28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

28 And all3605 Israel3478 heard8085 of the judgment4941 which834 the king4428 had judged;8199 and they feared3372 the king:4428 for they saw7200 that the wisdom2451 of God430 was in him, to do6213 judgment.4941
